LSD, madness and healing : Mystical experiences as possible link between psychosis model and therapy model, Isabel Wießner et al., 2021

LSD, madness and healing : Mystical experiences as possible link between psychosis model and therapy model Isabel Wießner, Marcelo Falchi, Fernanda Palhano-Fontes, Amanda Feilding, Sidarta Ribeiro and Luís Fernando Tófoli Psychological Medicine, 2021, 1-15. Doi : 10.1017/S0033291721002531   Abstract Background : For a century, psychedelics have been investigated as models of psychosis for demonstrating phenomenological similarities with psychotic experiences and as therapeutic models for treating depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. This study sought to explore this paradoxical relationship connecting key parameters of the psychotic experience, psychotherapy, and psychedelic experience. Methods : In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design, 24 healthy volunteers received 50 μg D-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or inactive placebo. [...]

Reviewing the Potential of Psychedelics for the Treatment of PTSD, Erwin Krediet et al., 2020

Reviewing the Potential of Psychedelics for the Treatment of PTSD Erwin Krediet, Tijmen Bostoen, Joost Breeksema, Annette van Schagen, Torsten Passie, Eric Vermetten International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, 2020, 23, (6), 385–400 doi : 10.1093/ijnp/pyaa018 https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32170326/   Abstract There are few medications with demonstrated efficacy for the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Treatment guidelines have unequivocally designated psychotherapy as a first line treatment for PTSD. Yet, even after psychotherapy, PTSD often remains a chronic illness, with high rates of psychiatric and medical comorbidity. Meanwhile, the search for and development of drugs with new mechanisms of action has stalled. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore not [...]

Effects of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy on Major Depressive Disorder. A Randomized Clinical Trial, Alan K. Davis et al., 2020

Effects of Psilocybin-Assisted Therapy on Major Depressive Disorder. A Randomized Clinical Trial Alan K. Davis, PhD; Frederick S. Barrett, PhD; Darrick G. May, MD; Mary P. Cosimano, MSW; Nathan D. Sepeda, BS; Matthew W. Johnson, PhD; Patrick H. Finan, PhD; Roland R. Griffiths, PhD JAMA Psychiatry, 2020, E1-E9. doi : 10.1001/jamapsychiatry.2020.3285   IMPORTANCE : Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a substantial public health burden, but current treatments have limited effectiveness and adherence. Recent evidence suggests that 1 or 2 administrations of psilocybin with psychological support produces antidepressant effects in patients with cancer and in those with treatment-resistant depression. OBJECTIVE : To investigate the effect of psilocybin [...]

LSD Increases Primary Process Thinking via Serotonin 2A Receptor Activation, Rainer Kraehenmann et al., 2017

LSD Increases Primary Process Thinking via Serotonin 2A Receptor Activation Rainer Kraehenmann, Dan Pokorny, Helena Aicher, Katrin H. Preller, Thomas Pokorny, Oliver G. Bosch, Erich Seifritz and Franz X. Vollenweider Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2017, Volume 8, Article 814, 1-9. Doi : 10.3389/fphar.2017.00814   Rationale : Stimulation of serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptors by lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and related compounds such as psilocybin has previously been shown to increase primary process thinking – an ontologically and evolutionary early, implicit, associative, and automatic mode of thinking which is typically occurring during altered states of consciousness such as dreaming. However, it is still largely unknown whether LSD induces [...]

Rethinking Therapeutic Strategies for Anorexia Nervosa: Insights From Psychedelic Medicine and Animal Models, Claire J. Foldi et al., 2020

Rethinking Therapeutic Strategies for Anorexia Nervosa: Insights From Psychedelic Medicine and Animal Models Claire J. Foldi, Paul Liknaitzky, Martin Williams, Brian J. Oldfield Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2020 | Volume 14 | Article 43 : 1-8 doi : 10.3389/fnins.2020.00043   Anorexia nervosa (AN) has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disease, yet available pharmacological treatments are largely ineffective due, in part, to an inadequate understanding of the neurobiological drivers that underpin the condition. The recent resurgence of research into the clinical applications of psychedelic medicine for a range of mental disorders has highlighted the potential for classical psychedelics, including psilocybin, to alleviate symptoms of AN [...]

Ketamine Promising in Cocaine Addiction, Batya Swift Yasgur, 2019

Ketamine Promising in Cocaine Addiction Batya Swift Yasgur, MA, LSW Medscape.com, July 05, 2019 https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/915260_print   A single ketamine infusion combined with mindfulness-based relapse prevention therapy (MBRP) improves abstinence and cuts cravings in cocaine-dependent adults, new research suggests. Results of a randomized control trial show that rates of abstinence were significiantly higher in patients who received ketamine plus MBRP compared to control patients. Moreover, those in the group that received ketamine were significantly less likely to experience relapse compared to control persons, and cravings were also significantly lower in the ketamine group throughout the trial. "In individuals receiving MBRP, a single ketamine infusion led to significantly greater odds [...]
