Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for alcoholism : meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, Teri S Krebs and Pål-Ørjan Johansen, 2012

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) for alcoholism : meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials Teri S Krebs and Pål-Ørjan Johansen Journal of Psychopharmacology, 2012, 1–9 DOI: 10.1177/0269881112439253 jop.sagepub.com   Abstract Assessments of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in the treatment of alcoholism have not been based on quantitative meta-analysis. Hence, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials in order to evaluate the clinical efficacy of LSD in the treatment of alcoholism. Two reviewers independently extracted the data, pooling the effects using odds ratios (ORs) by a generic inverse variance, random effects model. We identified six eligible trials, including 536 participants. There was evidence for a beneficial effect of LSD [...]

Cannabidiol regulation of emotion and emotional memory processing : relevance for treating anxiety-related and substance abuse disorders, Jonathan L.C. Lee et al., 2017

Cannabidiol regulation of emotion and emotional memory processing : relevance for treating anxiety-related and substance abuse disorders Jonathan L.C. Lee, Leandro J. Bertoglio, Francisco S. Guimarães and Carl W. Stevenson British Journal of Pharmacology, 2017, 174, 3242–3256 DOI : 10.1111/bph.13724 Abstract Learning to associate cues or contexts with potential threats or rewards is adaptive and enhances survival. Both aversive and appetitive memories are therefore powerful drivers of behaviour, but the inappropriate expression of conditioned responding to fear- and drug-related stimuli can develop into anxiety-related and substance abuse disorders respectively. These disorders are associated with abnormally persistent emotionalmemories and inadequate treatment, often leading to symptom relapse. [...]

Acid Diethylamide (LSD) in the Treatment of Addictions : Historical Perspectives and Future Prospects, Mitchell B. Liester, 2014

Acid Diethylamide (LSD) in the Treatment of Addictions: Historical Perspectives and Future Prospects Mitchell B. Liester Current Drug Abuse Reviews, 2014, 7, 146-156 1874-4745/14 $58.00+.00 © 2014 Bentham Science Publishers   Abstract : Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a semisynthetic compound with strong psychoactive properties. Chemically related to serotonin, LSD was initially hypothesized to produce a psychosislike state. Later, LSD was reported to have benefits in the treatment of addictions. However, widespread indiscriminate use and reports of adverse affects resulted in the classification of LSD as an illicit drug with no accepted medical use. This article reviews LSD’s storied history from its discovery, to its use [...]

Clinical Interpretations of Patients Experience in a Trial of Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy for Alcohol Use Disorder BOGENSCHUTZ M.P., PODREBARAC S.K., DUANE J.H., AMEGADZIE S.S., MALONE T.C., ROSS L.T., MENNENGA S.E. Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2018, 9, article 100. Doi : 10.3389/fphar.2018.00100   Abstract : After a hiatus of some 40 years, clinical research has resumed on the use of classic hallucinogens to treat addiction. Following completion of a small open-label feasibility study, we are currently conducting a double-blind placebo-controlled clinical trial of psilocybin-assisted treatment of alcohol use disorder. Although treatment effects cannot be analyzed until the study is complete, descriptive case studies provide a useful window into the therapeutic process [...]

Cannabidiol inhibits priming-induced reinstatement of methamphetamine in REM sleep deprived rats Saeideh Karimi-Haghighi, Abbas Haghparast, 2017

Cannabidiol inhibits priming-induced reinstatement of methamphetamine in REM sleep deprived rats Saeideh Karimi-Haghighi, Abbas Haghparast Neuroscience Research Center, School of Medicine, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.pnpbp.2017.08.022   A B S T R A C T Methamphetamine (METH) is a widely abused and a severely addictive psychostimulant. Relapse is the main cause of concern when treating addiction. It could manifest after a long period of abstinence. Previous studies showed that there is a strong connection between sleep impairment and relapse. Also, it has been reported that cannabidiol might be a potential treatment for drug craving and relapse. [...]

Reducing the risks of drug use: The case for set and setting, P. Dalgarno, D. Shewan, 2005

Reducing the risks of drug use: The case for set and setting PHIL DALGARNO & DAVID SHEWAN Addiction Research and Theory,  2005, 13, 3, 259–265   Abstract : The central proposition of this article is that if people are thoughtful, well-prepared and aware of the means and best environments for using a particular drug, then the risks associated with the use of a particular drug – any drug – can be minimal. The types of drugs discussed in this context focus on those assumed to be the most ‘addictive’ – heroin and cocaine – to those less well-known but potentially more hazardous to use without [...]
